15 Home Remedies for Period Cramps That Will Save Your Life

For every girl out there, there is nothing as painful as period cramps. They come once every month, and they are exceptionally irritating and painful in the younger days.

I remember when I was a teenager, I used to just lie down, cover myself with a blanket and wait for the suffering to end. Thankfully, over the years, I’ve found several ways to cope with the period cramps.

Nowadays, I don’t even consider period cramps painful. To help you, I will share some of my home remedies.


People are narrow and shallow sometimes, and yoga is a great example. When it comes to yoga, people think that yoga only helps you relax and calm your mind.

In reality, this ancient Chinese tradition does much more for you than relieving you from stress. Gentle stretches will help your body relax and take your mind off the period cramps and pain.


Frog pose is one of the best stretch exercises you can find out there. Think of frogs when they are calm and not moving. The stretch targets your pelvic area, vastly reducing the pain from period cramps.

Place all four on the ground like in cat pose. From there, place your legs little wider than your hip width, and make sure your feet are turned out.

Lower yourself forward, and rest on your hands and elbows. You can rock your hips forward and backward gently to stretch even more.

Walk in the Park

Last on the exercise list for home remedies for period cramps is a quick walk or jog in the park. The secret to getting rid of the pain and cramps is to get moving.

That doesn’t mean you need a 10km marathon. I can promise you that you will feel much better after a quick jog or walk in the park. Challenge yourself and beat the pain.

Chamomile Tea

When it comes to relaxing and relieving stress, nothing beats chamomile tea. Additionally, chamomile tea helps you control the muscle spasms. So, if you want to get rid of period cramps, stir yourself a tea.

Enjoy a Glass of Wine

Any red wine will do, but as you know, Pinot Noir is one of the best. But any red wine will do the trick, as the wine contains resveratrol, an active compound that can reduce uterus contractions and cramps. Cheers.

Bring a bottle of water everywhere with you while in your period. Trust me, you will thank me.

Soothing Bath

If you stick to my recommendations of exercise during period cramps, soothing bath comes in handy after sweating from the jog. The warm water will relax your muscles and help you recover. You can add some essential oils for more relaxation.

Hot Water Bottle

If the pain and cramps are just impossible to cope with, a hot water bottle is the best natural alternative to pain medications. I am not going to go deep into the science of it, but getting cozy and hot while in pain helps you reduce period cramps.

Apply a hot water bottle under your lower abdomen, and cover yourself with a blanket.

Ice Pack

I know some women prefer the coziness and warmth of a hot water bottle, but ice packs can also help. The soothing coolness of the ice is the second alternative to hot bottle. Ice decreases inflammation in the area and helps you relax.


If there is one spice you should be eating during your period that is ginger. With proven anti-inflammatory properties, ginger is effective pain medication. A cup of ginger tea is all you need, or you can add some ginger in your soups/smoothies.

Avoid Salty Foods

I mentioned previously that you need to avoid coffee during your period. Salty foods are another thing you need to avoid. Try to resist salty foods, despite your cravings. They will also dehydrate you and worsen the inflammation and pain.

Fennels seeds are a great medication for reducing painful intestinal problems. They improve digestion, reduce bloating, and generally help with period cramps. However, you should consult your physician before dipping into fennel seeds, as they are very potent.

Having sex while in period is not something I would recommend. But you can get an orgasm without sex. Masturbation is something that can help with your period cramps and pain.

And you can have sex a day or two before getting your period to stimulate your pelvic region. Orgasms also boosts endorphin production, and I already said they are good for your mood.
