Blood type 0 Diet – What to Eat and What to Avoid

Can you follow a diet based on your blood type, be it A, B, AB, or 0 and shed some pounds? Will a diet based on your blood type will help you live a healthier life?

That is exactly what naturopath Peter J. D’Adamo proposed years ago. He claimed that the foods we consume react chemically with our blood type, and following a diet based on your blood type, you can digest foods more efficiently [1]

With that in mind, despite the popularity of the blood type 0 diet, there is still little to no scientific study and evidence of the success.

People with type 0 blood, thrive on intense physical exercise and animal protein. And unlike other blood types, their muscle tissue should be slightly on the acid side.

They can easily and efficiently digest and metabolize meat because they tend to have high stomach-acid content. The success of the diet for weight loss depends mostly on use of lean and chemical-free meat, poultry, and fish.

General principles

The general principles for the blood type 0 diet include restricting grains, breads, legumes, and beans [2]

People with blood type 0 are usually sensitive to gluten found in wheat germ and whole wheat products, which interferes with their insulin efficiency and metabolic rate.

Another factor are beans and legumes, which contain lectins that deposit in the muscle tissue, making them less charged for physical activity [3]

Because of that, your body is not ready enough for the physical workout which results in extra stress on the body and muscles.

The third factor is thyroid hormone, as in people with blood type 0 usually have low levels of thyroid hormone or unstable thyroid functions. That can also cause metabolic problems, meaning it is good to avoid foods that inhibit thyroid hormone [4]

The brassica family of vegetables can also cause problems for Type Os. You need to consume more vegetables that are high in vitamin K. Because of their high acidity stomach, people with blood type 0 should consume fruits of alkaline nature [5]

Most importantly, Type Os should restrict use of dairy products, as their system is not designed for the proper metabolism.

What to eat?

As with other blood type diets, your blood type 0 diet dictates what you can eat, and what you cannot. Certain foods should be eaten, as they allow your body to function properly.

You will notice that some fruits are good, some are not, some vegetables are good, some are not, and some animal protein is great, and other is not.

Animal proteins


People with blood type 0 should consume most meat products and cold-water fish. There are some exceptions, but we will talk about them later on.

Here are some meats to consume:

  • Beef
  • Lamb
  • Cod
  • Herring
  • Mackerel
  • Mutton
  • Veal


Soy Milk

Generally speaking, people with blood type 0 should avoid dairy products, as well as eggs.

But they can occasionally consume products like:

  • Soy milk
  • Cheeses including goat cheese, feta, mozzarella, and farmer cheese
  • Butter

Nuts are a great source of protein, but also of healthy fats. If you have blood type 0, you can consume most fats, except the ones listed in the avoid list later on.

Here are some beneficial nuts:

  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Hazelnuts


Pinto beans

People with blood type 0 can tolerate most beans. The most beneficial, however, are the following:

  • Pinto beans
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Azuki beans



People with blood type 0 should avoid most grains. However, they can tolerate some of them. And that is good, considering grains are an essential part of most diets.

You can consume:

  • Barley
  • Amaranth
  • Rice
  • Kasha
  • Buckwheat
  • Rye
  • Spelt



Most vegetables are well-tolerated in the blood type 0 diet.

Here are some recommendations:

  • Tomatoes
  • Chicory
  • Dandelion
  • Artichoke
  • Garlic
  • Kale
  • Horseradish
  • Onions
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Turnips
  • Parsley
  • Red peppers
  • Okra
  • Seaweed


Same as with vegetables, you can tolerate most of the fruits. Some, however, are better than others.

Here are those:

  • Figs
  • Berries
  • Plums
  • Prunes
  • Grapefruit

Condiments and spices


  • Iodized salt
  • Curry
  • Parsley
  • Honey
  • Cocoa
  • Chocolate
  • Cayenne pepper

Foods to avoid

In the same way there are foods you can eat, there are also foods you need to avoid. While there is no scientific background, supporters of the diet claim you might experience unwanted weight gain by consuming foods that are not good for you.

They include the following food groups and foods.

Animal proteins

  • Pork, including ham and bacon
  • Octopus
  • Catfish
  • Smoked salmon
  • Caviar
  • Goose
  • Barracuda
  • Conch


Following the blood type diet for type 0 means you need to avoid most dairy products.

Specifically, you need to avoid the following:

  • Yogurt
  • Anything that is not mentioned in the allowed list


While nuts are mostly safe for people with blood type 0, some are not as good.

They include:

  • Cashews
  • Peanuts
  • Pistachios
  • Brazil nuts
  • Poppy seeds


If you want to have success in your weight loss process, avoid these beans:

  • Copper beans
  • Kidney beans
  • Tamarind beans
  • Domestic, green, and red lentils


You should avoid the following grains:

  • Corn
  • Gluten
  • Bulgur
  • White and whole wheat
  • Oat
  • Bran
  • Seven-grains


If you have blood type 0, you can tolerate most vegetables. However, some are not as easily and well-tolerated.

Those include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and mustard greens
  • Alfalfa sprouts
  • Shitake mushrooms
  • Fermented olives
  • Potatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Corn
  • Avocado
  • Leek


The diet also recommends you try to avoid or at least reduce certain fruits.

Those are:

  • Oranges
  • Tangerines
  • Strawberries and blackberries
  • Melons
  • Cantaloupe
  • Coconut

Spices and condiments

  • Pepper
  • Vinegar
  • Cinnamon
  • Cornstarch
  • Corn syrup
  • Nutmeg
  • Ketchup
  • Pickles
  • Mayonnaise
  • Vanilla
