Can you lose weight with yoga?

When you think of losing fat, losing weight, and burning calories, you might not think of yoga. Cardio is usually the first thing that comes to mind for a sweat-inducing workout. But do not be fooled by the refinement of yoga. The deep breathing and sometimes slow poses of yoga can also help you lose weight.

Yoga supports physical, mental, and spiritual development. And it is an effective tool for losing weight. In fact, many celebrities have praised yoga as a way to help them stay in shape. That list includes Madonna, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Aniston.

The trick is that yoga works in a different way to help you lose weight, not in the same way cardio does.

Yoga and calorie burning

Yes, yoga is not traditionally considered an aerobic exercise. However, there are types of yoga that are more physical than others. For starters, bikram and hot yoga involved difficult positions that cause your heart rate to go up. Add in the environment of heated room, and you will burn more calories than ever.

In the same time, there are intense styles of yoga that burn calories and prevent weight gain. Power yoga is a great example, which is a workout even more difficult than some gym workouts. Ashtanga is another great example.

Not only yoga helps you lose weight, but it also helps you improve metabolism rate, and develop muscle tone.

How often should you practice yoga?

If your goal is to lose weight and tone your muscles, you should practice yoga as often as possible. The beauty of yoga is that unlike cardio and weight lifting, it does not put a strain on your muscles. You do not need a recovery day, since you always have stretching exercises that will relax your muscles.

However, for best results, we recommend practicing three to five times per week for at least one hour. If you are a beginner, start slowly, and then gradually build up your practice. You should build up your flexibility over time to prevent injuries.

For best results, combine yoga with activities such as walking, cycling, hiking, or swimming.

How much weight can you lose?

There is no definite answer here. How much weight can you lose by doing yoga is a complicated question, and depends on a lot of factors. Those include your sleep, lifestyle, and diet habits. If you are eating everything you can find on the table, it doesn’t matter how much you exercise, the results will not come.

You have to be aware of what are you eating, how much you are sleeping, and other lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking alcohol.

We have to stress the importance of healthy diet, rich in vitamins and minerals.

Strike a fat burning pose

When it comes to yoga for weight loss, it is all about the poses you practice. Certain poses are dubbed as “killer poses for weight loss”. Yoga speeds up the metabolism by stimulating endocrine glands, the same glands that regulate metabolic rate. Some poses that are worth trying include:

  • Shoulder stand and fish pose, both of which affect the thyroid and give you a metabolism boost
  • Spinal twist, lengthening child’s pose, or cobra pose are all yoga poses that massage the abdomen and target internal organs
  • Dog poses, the downward-acing and the upward-facing dog poses are good for toning hips and thighs
  • The plank pose is an all-around full body workout
  • Boat pose engages your whole body, but mainly your core, and helps reduce stress
  • Sun salutations are the most common exercise in yoga for weight loss, and you can increase intensity by holding for longer period or speeding up the pace
