In the past several years, juicing is one of the hottest trends when it comes to healthy lifestyle. What is juicing? It is the process of extracting the liquid from fruits and vegetables, all while removing the solids. You can do it by hand, or with a motor-driven juicer.
Basically, juicing is an easy way to consume lots of nutrients without having to eat the whole fruit or vegetable. One of the claims in recent years is that juicing helps with weight loss. So, can you lose weight by juicing?
That is the topic of today’s discussion.
Juice and juicing diets
Juice from fruits and vegetables does not contain any skin, pulp, or seeds. That means it is more concentrated in terms of vitamins and minerals, but lacks fiber. Juicing diets are often also called detox diets. Why? Well, because basically with juicing diets, you are consuming only fruits and vegetables, and no toxins from fats or sugar.
There are many types of juicing diets, the most popular being the 3 day juice diet. When you put yourself on a juice diet, you are substituting meals with juice. In other words, no solid foods during the diet, just juice. The point of the diet is to avoid consuming solid foods, while still getting enough nutrients from the juice.
As such, juicing diets are very low in calories. And that is how you lose weight. Some people opt for a one day juice fast, while others go for several days.
How juicing can help you lose weight?
Our body can absorb nutrients a lot easier when they are presented in liquid form, not in solid form. This is one of the ways juicing helps you lose weight.
We all know vitamins and minerals help you boost and speed up metabolism burning rate. And consuming juices can vastly increase your vitamins and mineral consumption.
Additionally, juices are low in calories. Especially if you opt for green juices, which contain little to no sugar. When your calorie consumption is lower than your calorie burning rate, it is only natural that you lose weight.
Juices can help you feel full for a certain amount of time, but they cannot replace a full meal. If you go on a juice diet, we strongly recommend doing it just for a couple of days.
Downsides of juicing
While there are many benefits of juicing, there are also downsides. For starters, consuming juices means you are depriving your body of any fiber. And without fiber, your metabolism is altered, and your bowel movement is different.
Not only juices lack fiber, they also lack protein, or fats. In the same time, juices are high in sugar, especially if you make fruit juices. While that is natural sugar called fructose, it is still sugar. One fruit juice might contain four of five fruits, and that is just unnatural to consume.
Consuming only juices for a long period will cause fatigue and weakness, since your body is deprived of many nutrients. Not to mention, you will lose your muscle mass, since there is no protein to build muscle.
If you want an answer to the question can you lose weight by juicing, the answer is yes, you can. However, you should never go on a juicing fasting diet for longer than five days. Your body needs protein, fat, fiber, and more in order to function properly.
Juicing is best served when used as supplementation to your regular healthy diet. Drink one juice in the morning, preferably a green juice, and then continue your solid foods balanced diet.
