What is the Ideal Ratio of Veggies in Your Juice? Your Questions Answered

Juicing is the latest trend for eating healthy. Juicing helps you consume a lot of minerals and vitamins, and do that in liquid form. Let’s be honest, a lot of people do not like the idea of eating whole vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, spinach, kale, or some fruits. But juicing helps you get a couple of cups of fruits and veggies. But with that in mind, there is always the risk of adding too much fruit, and too little vegetables.
Why is that important? Well, if you add too much fruit, you are consuming a lot of sugar, and not much vitamins and minerals. Fruits, while they contain natural sugar, they still contain sugar. And they are packed with sugar. There might not be an ideal ratio, but we have an idea of something close to it. For starters, we recommend at least 2:1 ratio to vegetables if you want something more on the sweet side.
But if you are ready to take juicing to the next level, you need something more extreme.
Best fruits and vegetables
When it comes to juicing, ratio is not the only thing you need to consider. You also need to consider which fruits and veggies give you a good juice. With that in mind, here are some of the best ingredients that produce nicely-flavored juice.
- Soft fruits like pineapple, berries, citrus, melons, mango, peach, nectarines, kiwi fruit, plums, and grapes
- Hard fruits including apples, pears, pomegranates, and cranberries
- Soft vegetables, including kale, spinach, mint, cilantro, cucumber, and parsley
- Hard vegetables, including cabbage, carrots, beets, celery, ginger root, and sweet potato
And if you thought fruits are sweet, and vegetables are sour, think again. Vegetables can be sweet as well. That applies mostly to root vegetables like carrots, beets, sweet potato, and similar starchy vegetables. They have a natural sweet taste to their juice, even though they are considered vegetables.
How much juice to drink?
The best way to implement juicing to your life is to start your day with a glass of juice. But what about the rest of the day? We recommend drinking four to six juices per day, plus water. That will give you enough fluids. Remember, you need solid food as well.
The 80/20 rule
When it comes to ideal ratio of fruits and vegetables, we recommend the 80/20 rule. It is easy to use this rule when you have five ingredients, which means only one of them should be fruit, and the rest vegetables. But it is a bit harder when you have juice with three, four, six, or more ingredients.
That being said, you can use the 80/20 rule in a different way as well. For example, if you drink five juices per day, make the first juice 100% fruit, while the remaining four should be almost all vegetables. And make sure two of those remaining juices are predominantly green.
Don’t forget the seeds
Juices deliver a good amount of vitamins and minerals to your body. But they lack fiber and protein. One way to counter that is to add a few seeds to your juice. Flaxseeds, chia seeds, and similar give your juice more texture and nutrients you just cannot get from vegetables and fruits.
