A lot of times, when you are losing weight, you are mainly losing water weight. You are probably wondering, what is water weight? Simply put, it is water that builds up in the body causing bloating and puffiness. Being that more than 60% of our body is made of water, any excess water being held in the body is called water weight. And by drinking more water, you can get rid of that “extra weight”.
Drinking water has been linked with weight loss for a long time. There are many studies that show water has weight loss benefits. Here is how water can help you lose weight.
How water helps with weight loss?
Water suppresses appetite
Water is a natural appetite suppressant. When the stomach senses that it is full, it sends signals to the brain to stop eating. Drinking water can take up space in the stomach, giving your brain a sense of fullness.
In many cases, we tend to eat thinking we are hungry, when we are actually thirsty.
More calorie burning
Drinking water can help you burn more calories. Now, that doesn’t mean that one glass of water will burn 1000 calories. But drinking water can help you burn between 3 and 5 percent more calories than usually.
Drinking cold water can burn even more calories, as the body uses energy to heat up the water for digestion.
Remove toxins from the body
Your body needs water to remove waste, including urine and feces. Without water, the body cannot expel the toxins that accumulate around your belly. When water builds up in the body, you will feel swollen, bloated, and tired. And bloating adds inches to your waistline.
Without water, your body cannot burn fat. And it cannot metabolize carbs as well. Lipolysis is the process of metabolizing fat, and the first step in this process is hydrolysis, or interaction between water molecules and fats. The result is creation of fatty acids and glycerol.

In order to lose weight, and burn calories, you have to exercise. And water can take your workout to the next level. Water helps your muscles, joints, and connective tissues to move correctly. That will stimulate the lungs and heart to work effectively, as you ramp up your activity levels.
Drink water before, during, and after exercise to avoid dehydration. Without water, you will feel tired, and you cannot finish your workout.
How much water do you need?
There is no standard recommendation for how much water to drink. Yes, the age old rule is 8 glasses of water per day. But some people require more water, others require less water. It all depends on many factors, including activity level, age, size, temperature, humidity, health status, sun exposure, and more.
Generally speaking, the National Academy of Medicine suggests women to drink 2,700 mL per day, while men should drink 3,700 ml per day.
The right time to drink water
You will be surprised, but the timing of drinking water is also important. When you drink water can affect whether you lose weight or not. You might be drinking huge amount of water, but if you do it at the wrong time, there will be no results.
With that in mind, studies suggest that you should drink 500ml of water 30 minutes before main meals to lose weight. The theory is that water will act as an appetite suppressant, something we mentioned previously. That will prevent you from overeating.
