Healthy lifestyle is something we all strive for. Achieving wellness, in both physical and emotional state is not easy. Many different things help you live a healthy lifestyle. But if you consider everything, these 10 changes to your lifestyle will dramatically improve your health. Healthy lifestyle is not just about eating healthy and exercising. There is much more to it.

Eat a variety of foods

Eating healthy means eating a variety of healthy foods. Medically speaking, we need more than 40 different nutrients on a regular basis. No single food, no matter how nutrient dense it is, can provide them all. Therefore, a single healthy meal is not enough.

You need to follow a balanced diet, which ensures you get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Leafy greens, fruits, dairy, whole grains, nuts, and lean meat, all of those should be on your menu.

Get enough sleep

Without 6 to 8 hours of sleep, your body cannot function properly. You can say to yourself that you can function with three hours of sleep as much as you like, that is simply not true. Lack of sleep leads to a number of health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and more importantly, heart disease.

You can survive with three to four hours of sleep every now and then. But continuous lack of sleep can affect your immune system and make you less able to fight off infections.

To improve your sleep, avoid stimulants close to bedtime, avoid alcohol before bedtime, avoid bright lights, and put your electronics away from the bedroom.

Drink more water

We cannot stress this enough. Basically, almost every article about health and wellness suggests drinking more water. And people constantly ignore that aspect. Our body is made of 60% water. We need water for all of the body functions, including carrying nutrients, carrying oxygen through the body, and eliminating waste. Eight to ten glasses of water is the bare minimum, and in the hot summery days, you need even more.

If your urine is colorless or slightly yellow, you are drinking enough water.

Replace saturated with unsaturated fat

One of the big mistakes people make is avoid fats altogether. Fats are good, as long as they are the healthy fats. Fats are important for a good health and proper functioning of the body.

There are two types of fats, saturated, or the bad ones, and unsaturated, the healthy ones. Limit the consumption of saturated fats that come from fast food, and foods of animal origin. Instead, focus on the good fats sourced from fish, nuts, avocado, and olive oil.

Don’t drink your sugar

When people start their healthy lifestyle challenge, they try to limit sugar. But they forget sugar can come in liquid shape as well. Sugary drinks are your worst enemy if you want to live a healthy life.

One soda has more sugar than a bar of chocolate. Fruit juices, especially commercial ones, are just as bad. Even your home fruit juice contains a lot of sugar. Therefore, try to make more vegetable juices, and limit fruits in your juice to one fruit.

Meditation

Meditate often, as meditation can calm your mind, soul, and body. Meditation also helps you deal with the stress of your everyday life. If you think it is hard to meditate, just type “how to meditate on YouTube”. You will get hundreds of quick lessons for meditation.

Don’t completely ignore coffee

In small doses, coffee can actually be healthy. Coffee is high in antioxidants, and some studies have shown coffee can improve the longevity of your life. In addition, coffee can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.

However, when it comes to coffee, one cup per day is more than enough. Remember, high doses of caffeine can do more harm than good.

Breathe deeply

We need oxygen. It is a vital source of life. Without oxygen, we would die. You may think you know how to breathe, but are you doing it properly? Taking only shallow breathes means you are breathing to just one third of your lung capacity.

Full breath is when your lungs are completely filled, and your abdomen expands. There is just minimum movement in your shoulders. Try to take full breaths, and practice the technique regularly. It will help you relieve stress, and lower blood pressure.

Substitute white carbs with brown carbs

White carbs are a synonym for refined grains, and those include white rice, white bread, crackers, pasta, tortillas wraps, and anything else made with white flour. During the production process, nutrients in white carbs are removed, leaving them rich in calories. In other words, these are the refined grains you have to avoid. Brown carbs, on the other hand, which are unrefined, and whole grains. Those include brown rice, oats, oatmeal, whole grains, and legumes.

Do not overcook your meat

Meat can be quite nutritious part of your daily diet. Meat is high in protein, and comes with several important nutrients.

Problems occur when you burn or overcook your meat. Overcooking leads to formation of harmful compounds. Try to cook your meat properly. Even better, steam it, for a meal with more nutrients.
