With their short life span, fruit flies can easily be categorized as the bane of homeowners.
The thing I hate the most about fruit flies is their ridiculously fast reproduction rate.
They go from 0 to 1000 in like a day.
And if you are wondering how to get rid of fruit flies, I have some traps that you might be interested in.
Fruit flies thrive in damp, moist places, and that is the first place you want to set your traps in if you like to get rid of fruit flies.
Apple Cider Vinegar Trap
What you need for this trap is one jar, a funnel that you can make it yourself, some dish soap, a ripe of overripe fruit (optional), and of course, the main ingredient, a half a cup of apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar comes from fermented apples, and fruit flies cannot resist the smell of fermentation, making this trap a dream drink for fruit flies.
You can heat up the vinegar to release even more of its fragrance.
After you heat up the vinegar, pour it into the jar.
Just make sure that the jar is deep enough for the fruit flies to drown in it.
Drop some dish soap.
Now, the last part is the funnel. Roll up a piece of paper, and insert it into the mouth of the jar.
This will make your own funnel. As the fruit flies get into the jar, they will drown.
There is a reason why these parasites are called fruit flies.
They absolutely love fruit.
Therefore, setting a trap with fruit is the ideal way to lure them in, and eventually, kill them.
You need a deep glass jar, some plastic wrap, a toothpick, soapy water, and some overripe fruits.
Place the overripe fruits at the bottom of the jar and cover the jar with the plastic wrap.
Poke holes in the plastic wrap with your toothpick.
Place the jar at places you notice fruit flies (remember, they like moist, damp places).
For prevention, always place a fruit trap jar outside of the doorway on sunny and warm days.
Once your jar is full with fruit flies, the way to get rid of fruit flies is to pour some soapy water and let the flies drown in it.
The Gardening Trap
If you thought fruit flies do not like spices, think again.
Herbs, especially basil, are an excellent way how to get rid of fruit flies.
You want some basil leaves on top of bananas or any other fruit.
While this trap won’t kill your fruit flies, it will repel them and keep them away from your home.
Red Wine Trap
Wine is usually made from fruits, or more precisely, grapes.
Therefore, fruit flies are attracted to it.
And the best part about this trap is that wine is liquid, making a great place for flies to drown into.
Put little red wine in a jar, cover it with a plastic wrap and poke holes in it.
The flies will get in, but they won’t be able to get out.
The only downside is that you will have to waste some of your precious wine for parasites.
Well, all for a good cause, right?
Milk, Sugar and Pepper Trap
I’ve found this trap in an Old Farmer’s Almanac, tried it, and was delighted by the results.
You need some milk, 4 oz of raw sugar and 2 oz of ground pepper.
Combine the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for ten minutes.
After the mixture is ready, pour it into shallow dishes that you will place around your house.
The flies will be drowning in it. You do not need to believe me, but this trap has been used in New England since 1850 and is one of the popular ways how to get rid of fruit flies.
